Hugh’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Week 16 – “Calm”
http://www.aliisaacstoryteller.com
This is the first time I have taken part in Hugh’s Photo Challenge, but as soon as I read his post on this week’s challenge, this image popped into my head.
Lough Ramor is a huge lake just five minutes drive from where I live. I used to go there often for a walk with Indi, my dog. In my early years of writing, being there always solved my writer’s block, and it’s so serene, it always calms me, whatever turmoil has gripped me. Walking beside water, or even floating on it, be it river, lake or ocean is always so relaxing.
I took this picture quite some years ago on my first ever Samsung Galaxy-S phone, and was amazed at how it turned out. Since then, I have always had a Samsung Galaxy, and the camera has got better and better.
Lough Ramor (in Irish, Loch Ramhar) is a large natural lake of 741 hectares situated near Virginia, County Cavan. In 2011, it was designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) by the EC under the Natura 2000 wildlife habitat conservation programme.
According to mythology, Lough Ramor was named after an ancient chieftain called Cenal Muinreamhair, which means ‘fat neck’; although this sounds somewhat insulting, it actually refers to his bulk of muscle and great strength!
Here are some more images of Lough Ramor, all of them suggesting ‘calm’.
Want to join the fun? Here’s what you need to do.
1. Take or choose a photo that you’ve taken that for you denotes, calm.
2. Create a new post on your blog entitled “Hugh’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Week 16 – “Calm”
3. Add the photo(s) you have taken to the post and tell us a little about what you are showing.
4. Create a pingback to Hugh’s post or leave a link to your post in the comments section of his post (not mine!) so that other participants can view your post.
Wonderful place, calming for sure!

It is, Éilis. Its a really big lake surrounded by trees with paths where you can walk safely. There are lots of bluebells at this time of year, and a river running through the forest to feed the lake, and there are 2 bridges over the river. In my pictures, the water is very flat and calm, like a mirror, and there is mist rising off the water, and out of the mist you can just see two low-lying island shrouded with trees and bushes growing right down to the water line. Does that help you to create an image? How can I make posts with pictures more accessible to the visually impaired?

Ali, you live so close to such beautiful lake?
I am ENVIOUS! 😀

Thank you, Hari! Yes it is very beautiful, but not close enough to see it from my house. It is a five minute drive to get there. There is a forest around it which you can walk in. Its very peaceful.

A lake surrounded by a forest! Ay, how many pictures I’d be able to draw there! XD

Welcome to my photo challenge, Ali. 😄
Great to have you on board the ‘Hugh’s Photo Challenge’ ship, and wow! what a way to start. Only five minutes away from where you live? You are so lucky to have that lovely lake so near to you. Lots of photos for this week’s challenge that include water are coming in. ‘Fat Neck’ you say? All I can say to that is if this place brings calm, peace and tranquility to you then it’s a place worth visiting as often as you can.
Couldn’t agree any more with you about the sound of the waves and ocean being so calming. I may not be able to swim, but the sound of the sea has always been very relaxing for me.

I was nervous about swimming too and it put me off learning, until I got a mask and snorkel. I wasn’t afraid of the water then. I enjoy swimming now. I’m not surprised lots of photos coming in are of water, there is something so soothing about being near it. I am lucky to live so near Lough Ramor, but in Cavan it’s impossible NOT to live near a lake, it’s said there’s one for each day of the year, that’s a lot of lakes! Thanks for the lovely welcome! 😊

Sounds a bit like castles in Wales. Wales holds the world record for the number of castles per square mile. I must get around and start taking some photos of them.

I’m right with you about the calming effect of water. Even the ocean with its constant movement. Gorgeous photo.

Thanks! I know, the movement coupled with the sound of water is so hypnotic! There’s nothing quite like falling asleep to the rhythm of the sea at night…

Long time since I have. Over an hours drive to the nearest beach. But when I was a kid we regularly slept on the beach under the stars. Didn’t need a tent. Wasn’t Ireland.

Gorgeous. And calming just looking at it. I agree. Water is calming to be around (or in) and this loch is particularly soothing. It should be the set of a movie.

Thanks Sarah. I have a picture of Indi standing in the shallows as 2 swans sailed up to him to say hello. It was breathtaking how he just stood there calmly and waited… he is not a calm dog lol! But the image was poor, so I didn’t post it. 😊
