Ali’s Book Review of Sacha Black’s KEEPERS

There’s this new book come out that I can’t wait to read; it’s called VICTOR, and it’s the second in the series of The Eden East Novels by my friend and author Sacha Black.

But today, I want to whet your appetite by talking about the first book in the series, KEEPERS. This is a YA series which reminded me very much of The Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard, and of course, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This is because, like Aveyard and Collins, Black has, with great skill and lots of research, managed to build a convincingly believable imaginary world in fine detail and great depth, yet one which remains individual and entirely unique.

Also like Aveyard and Collins, Black has birthed a phenomenal female protagonist who, more than being just a heroine, is multi-dimensional and very human, with all the strengths and failings we recognise and empathise with as part of the human condition. There are not enough female characters like this in today’s literature for young women; they tend to be portrayed as sexy sirens, or kickass bitches, or weak-minded and feeble. Black’s Eden East is as much a typical teenager as she is a powerful warrior and wielder of magic; Black has given her enough vulnerability and agency to inspire and empower young female readers.

The plot is full of twists and turns, love and betrayal, battle and magic, strange new worlds alongside the more familiar, and the action is fast-paced and sucks you in. Eden goes through an incredible development arc throughout the text, as she struggles to cope with death, forbidden love, her burgeoning womanhood and sexuality, stealthy enemies, complex politics, whilst trying to gain control of the overwhelming powers she has inherited.

This is the kind of book you can’t put down. In fact, hand on heart, the only negative thing I can say is that I was gutted when I came to the end and the sequel wasn’t yet published, as I would have downloaded it immediately and carried on reading, even though it was 3am in the morning!

And talking of which, may I just say, what an ending! Sacha Black really knows how to leave her readers gasping for more!

Buy it. Read it. You will love it. And luckily for you, VICTOR is published as of this week, so you don’t have the agonising wait for Book Two, like I did. In fact, you may as well just buy them both at once. Go On! I’ll make it easy for you… Here is the link.

KEEPERS by Sacha BlackSeventeen-year-old Eden East lives in a world ruled by fate.

A fact she accepted, until her soul was bound to her enemy. Now, accepting her fate is impossible, especially when Trey Luchelli appears. There’s something strangely familiar about him. Something Eden really ought to ignore. But the more she tries, the more she’s drawn to him. Eden is determined to find out what he’s hiding, no matter the cost, even if it’s her heart.

Then her parents are brutally murdered, and everyone’s a suspect, including her best friend.

Murder. Secrets. Destiny. They’re all connected.

But the path to answers is fraught with betrayal and danger. And the closer Eden gets, the more she unravels a dark history that will force her to question everything she’s ever known.

Keepers will transport fans of The Red Queen, The Young Elites and The Lunar Chronicles to a world unlike any other…

VICTOR, Book Two of the Eden East Novels by Sacha Black. When Eden East kills someone, she expects them to stay dead. It’s only polite, after all.

Exhausted from battle and finally bound to her soulmate, all Eden wants to do is attend university and spend time with Trey. When her demon-ex, Victor, suddenly returns from the afterlife, Eden’s convinced he’s out for revenge. The last thing she expects is for him to ask for help, especially when he’s being controlled by evil forces.

But when an enchanted lock and key go missing, she’s no longer sure who she can trust. If Eden can’t find them in time, not only will her life, and her heart, be torn apart, the very world she lives in could be destroyed – forever.

Victor will transport fans of The Red Queen, The Young Elites and The Lunar Chronicles to a world unlike any other…

SACHA BLACK has five obsessions; words, expensive shoes, conspiracy theories,  self-improvement, and breaking the rules. She also has the mind of a perpetual sixteen-year-old, only with slightly less drama and slightly more bills.

Sacha writes books about people with magical powers and other books about the art of writing. She lives in Hertfordshire, England, with her wife and genius, giant of a son.

When she’s not writing, she can be found laughing inappropriately loud, blogging, sniffing musty old books, fangirling film and TV soundtracks, or thinking up new ways to break the rules.
